Seafood transparency in Europe: Towards Informed Consumers and Fair Competition

This parliamentary event will bring together policy makers and stakeholders to discuss the importance of transparent and rigorous consumer labels for all seafood products, as well as the importance of having strong import controls and access to information on beneficial owners of fishing vessels.

The session will include three presentations and a panel discussion featuring representatives from the seafood industry, a consumer organisation, a chef, and non-profit organisations. Together, they will present and exchange on the need to include essential information on labels for all seafood products, to present concrete evidence showing that products with uninformative labels could contain species associated with high risks of illegal fishing and human rights abuses, and to illustrate how inadequate import controls also expose consumers to products stemming from illegal fishing. It will be followed by a short Q/A and coffee and tea networking opportunity.
